About Us: Unlocking Investment Intelligence
Welcome to Hedge Recon. Our mission is to provide transparent and actionable insights into the investment strategies of top institutional investors by meticulously analyzing publicly available SEC Form 13F data. We aim to increase the transparency of financial markets by offering a unique lens through which to view the collective actions and sentiments of significant market participants.
Understanding SEC Form 13F Data
SEC Form 13F is a quarterly report filed by institutional investment managers with at least $100 million in certain U.S. equity securities under management. These filings disclose their long U.S. equity holdings (including some ETFs, options, and convertible notes), offering a degree of transparency into their positioning. Key data points we utilize from these filings include the name of the issuer, CUSIP, market value of holdings, and the number of shares held.

Critical Considerations & Limitations of 13F Data
While Form 13F data is valuable, it’s crucial for users to understand its inherent limitations to avoid misinterpretations:
- Reporting Lag: Filings are made up to 45 days after a quarter ends, meaning data can be 45-135 days old and may not reflect current positions.
- Long Positions Primarily: The data generally only includes long positions in U.S. equities and certain other securities. Short positions, most bonds, and many derivatives are not disclosed, providing an incomplete view of a manager’s overall strategy.
- Snapshot in Time: Filings reflect holdings only as of the quarter-end date. Intra-quarter trading activity is not captured.
- Data Accuracy: Data is self-reported by filers, and the SEC does not guarantee its accuracy. Inconsistencies or errors can exist.
- Aggregation: Filings are typically at the institutional manager level, which may aggregate holdings from multiple distinct funds, potentially obscuring individual fund strategies.
- No Rationale: Filings show what is held, not why. The strategic intent behind changes must be inferred.
